Turn ignition key to on (lights up the dash etc but do not turn fully to turn the engine over), turn ignition off and disconnect battery within 15 seconds. The only time it wont release the key is if the battery is dead. You may have enough juice to roll down the windows but nothing else. And yes, if the battery dies in the Cruze, the key will not come out of the ignition. The ignition release for the car being in park is electronically actuated in the Cruze and all new GM cars. If you lose battery power, the switch is closed and it assumes you're not in park.
